The American Association of University Women has a dynamic history of bringing women together for a common cause. When you join our Local Branch of AAUW, you also become a member of the State AAUW, the National Association of University Women, and the International Federation of University Women (IFUW). AAUW currently provides leadership resources to members, from leadership opportunities within the local Branch, to the opportunity to meet and network with women nationwide at national, regional and state conferences, and at local meetings. Membership in AAUW provides a means to explore the leadership opportunities and to utilize the available national resources. Since 1881 the American Association of University Women has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls. AAUW is open to all graduates who hold a BA/BS or higher degree, as well as students. AAUW is composed of: § The Association—with more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide—advocates education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day—educational, social, economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in our public policy efforts, programs, Leadership and Training Institute, and diversity initiatives. AAUW's work extends globally through its international connections and membership in the International Federation of University Women. The AAUW Educational Foundation provides fellowships, grants, and awards to outstanding graduate women to advance education research, and for community action. The Foundation supports women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. The Foundation also funds for pioneering research on women, girls, and education, and supports the international symposia helping to improve the lives of women and girls around the globe. The Legal Advocacy Fund is now a part of the Educational Foundation and is the nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education. The Legal Advocacy Fund provides funds and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education. The Association's voice has long influenced legislative debate on critical social issues such as education, sex discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, affirmative action, Title IX, welfare reform, vocational education, pay equity, family and medical leave, and health care reform. Launched in 1995, AAUW's Voter Education Campaign aims to educate and mobilize women voters around congressional proposals that affect their lives. As part of the AAUW Voter Education Campaign, AAUW and other organizations in the Women's Network for Change send out thousands of Get the Facts alerts to individuals and organizations, providing information about congressional actions that impact women and families.
